Resumen: Dios castiga el pecado. Dios les da una cura para las mordidas venenosas de las serpientes en el yermo para los israelíes que regresan a él en fe y miran hacia la serpiente de bronce. Jesús es el único remedio para nuestro pecado.

Un día mi esposa estaba plantando flores en el jardín cuando comenzó a gritar. “¡Oh no! ¡Una serpiente!” Conseguí rápidamente una asada y me deshice de ella. A algunos granjeros no les molestan las serpientes de jardín porque se comen las ratas y otros roedores. ¡Algunas serpientes son tan mortales que puedes morir si te muerden! ¡Odio las serpientes! ¡Solo pienso que son malas! Hoy quiero contarles una historia acerca de serpientes de la Biblia.

Los hijos de Israel habían estado vagando en el yermo. Estaban cansados, sedientos, hambrientos y se quejaban. Estaban culpando a Dios por sus problemas. Querían más de lo que el Dios Maná les estaba dando cada día. Ellos querían regresar a su vieja forma de vida en Egipto donde eran esclavos. Esto era un pecado y Dios los castigó enviándoles montones de serpientes venenosas entre ellos. ¿Puedes imaginarte a la gente gritando ¡oh no, Serpientes!” y tratando de escaparse de ellas? Mucha gente murió por las mordidas. Luego se dieron cuenta que habían hecho algo malo y regresaron (o se arrepintieron) de su pecado. Le dijeron a Moisés que rezara para que Dios quitara las serpientes. Pero Dios no lo hizo. Les dio una elección.

Dios le dijo a Moisés que haga una serpiente de bronce y que la ponga en un poste. Si una persona era mordida, podía continuar mirando a las serpientes y morir o mirar hacia el poste en fe y vivir. Dios les estaba dando un remedio o cura para los pecados venenosos en su vida. Dios siempre ha tratado a sus hijos por igual desde el comienzo de los tiempos. En el jardín de Edén, la opción era obedecer (pero sin comer la fruta prohibida) y vivir, o pecar (comiéndola) y morir. Jesús explicó el significado de la historia de las serpiéntes a Nicodemo.

(Lea en voz alta Juan 3:14-15) Jesús dijo que Dios lo iba a dejar en la cruz como un sacrificio por los pecados de todos. A aquellos que miren la cruz y vean a Jesús en el lugar de sus pecados, vivirán para siempre. Jesús es la única cura para el pecado de nuestras vidas. Cuando los israelíes mordidos miraban hacia la serpiente de bronce, no estaban solo admitiendo su pecado, sino también, mirando al salvador con fe. Ellos no fueron salvados por lo que vieron sino por su fe en Dios.* Dios nos ha dado siempre el camino para ser salvados. Podemos agradecerle que nos enviara a Jesús para que sea condenado en la cruz por nosotros.
