Resumo: Josué obedeceu a Deus em Jericó para começar a conquista de Canaã pelos israelitas. Deus forneceu o plano de batalha e os israelitas agiram com fé. Arqueólogos puderam confirmar a precisão histórica da Bíblia nas ruínas da antiga Jericó.

Hoje quero contar a vocês sobre a batalha de Jericó. Depois de 40 anos vagando pelo deserto, Josué e o povo de Israel haviam cruzado as águas imóveis do Rio Jordão (outro milagre!) e agora estavam prontos para começar a conquistar a terra de Canaã. Josué era um líder militar experiente, mas nenhum treinamento militar poderia tê-lo preparado para o plano de Deus de tomar Jericó. Ele teria de agir com fé e confiar em Deus para vencer.

Jericó é considerada a cidade mais antiga do mundo. Por volta de 1400 a.C., Josué cercou a cidade-fortaleza de Jericó. Os exércitos de Israel a cercaram para que ninguém pudesse entrar ou sair. Nosso Senhor Jesus recebeu o mesmo nome que Josué, Yeshua em hebreu, que significa “Jeová é o Salvador”. Antes de a batalha começar, o capitão do exército de Israel (Josué) teve um encontro com o capitão do Senhor dos exércitos (Jesus). Josué O venerou e ouviu o plano de batalha com cuidado. Ele falou como se a cidade de Jericó já estivesse ganha. Isso certamente fortaleceu a fé de Josué. Deus estava lhe dizendo o futuro antes mesmo que acontecesse!

Este era o plano: Por seis dias o exército rondaria a cidade uma vez, enquanto os sacerdotes tocassem as trombetas de chifre de carneiro. Os sacerdotes com trombetas foram primeiro, depois foram os sacerdotes que carregavam a Arca da Aliança, seguidos pelo exército. O único som seria o soar das trombetas; ninguém poderia dizer uma palavra sequer. Então no sétimo dia, eles marchariam ao redor da cidade sete vezes, da mesma forma, e quando Josué desse o sinal, eles gritariam bem alto. Então os muros de Jericó cairiam e eles correriam para dentro da cidade e queimariam tudo e todos ali dentro.

Josué teve um grande teste de fé. Ele tentaria criar sua própria estratégia militar brilhante ou obedeceria a Deus completamente em um ato de fé? Ele ouviu o relato com as informações que seus espiões coletaram e pode até ter tentado elaborar algum plano de ataque. Se você acha que Josué teve dificuldades para acreditar em Deus, não ficamos sabendo disso. Deixem-me tentar uma coisa com vocês. Vocês veem esse copo de cristal? Este é o meu plano: Eu vou fazer este copo cantar. Isso mesmo, cantar! Vocês têm fé na minha capacidade de fazer isso? [Escute as respostas] Observem agora, enquanto eu faço o copo cantar. [Encha o copo com água até a metade. Coloque seu dedo indicador na água e gentilmente esfregue o interior da borda do copo, fazendo um movimento circular, até que a vibração produza um som agudo. Quando esse som ficar mais alto, diga “Está cantando! Estão ouvindo?”] Nunca subestime o poder da fé.

Assim como eu esfreguei meu dedo neste copo, o exército de Israel marchou ao redor de Jericó ao comando de Deus enquanto os sacerdotes tocavam suas trombetas. Talvez eles estivessem cansados de cobrir o mesmo terreno de novo e de novo todo dia, mas eles obedeceram a tudo o que Deus havia dito. Como cristãos, podemos nos cansar de lidar com o mesmo problema várias vezes, mas podemos confiar em Deus para nos ajudar. Finalmente, no sétimo dia, depois de marchar ao redor da cidade pela sétima vez, Josué deu o comando e todos gritaram o mais alto que puderam. Vamos tentar fazer isso agora, vamos lá, gritem! [Cubra seus ouvidos] Então um grande milagre de fé aconteceu: os muros da cidade caíram, vieram ao chão, formando uma rampa para o exército israelita invadir! Eles correram direto para dentro e queimaram tudo. A única família que sobreviveu dentro de Jericó foi Raabe e a família dela. Ela ajudou os espiões e mais tarde foi parte da linhagem de ancestrais de Jesus (Mateus 1:5) porque ela teve fé e confiou que Deus a salvaria.

Arqueólogos (pessoas que fazem escavações em lugares antigos) encontraram esses muros antigos e os restos queimados da cidade. Podemos confiar no que a Bíblia diz. A Bíblia é um registro histórico confiável. Nada foi tirado da cidade. Josué colocou uma maldição em Jericó e ninguém jamais reconstruiu algo no lugar onde ela ficava. Deus estava determinado a aniquilar as práticas de idolatria de Canaã. Deus começou a conquistar Canaã com essa vitória milagrosa em Jericó, onde os muros vieram ao chão!
